Montenegrin Wines
Živjeli! Welcome to the Montenegrin corner of The Balkan Pour. Prepare to discover wines from a country whose name means “Black Mountain,” and whose most famous grape produces reds as deep and powerful as its landscapes! Montenegro’s wine story is closely tied to its geography and its most celebrated indigenous variety.
While a relatively small country, Montenegro has a long history of viticulture, concentrated in specific areas that benefit from diverse microclimates. From the vast plains around Lake Skadar to vineyards nestled in coastal or hillside locations, the conditions are particularly favourable for robust reds and some interesting whites.
Whether you’re hiking through national parks, relaxing on the Adriatic coast, or seeking out unique wines to try at home, Montenegrin wines offer a true taste of this stunning country. Let’s raise a glass and explore!
Montenegro’s Vineyards: Focusing on Key Areas
Montenegrin wine production is primarily focused in a few key areas, each with its own characteristics:
- The Skadar Lake Basin (Podgorica Plain): This is the most important and largest wine-growing area in Montenegro. The vast plain around Lake Skadar benefits from a combination of Mediterranean and continental influences, with hot summers ideal for ripening grapes, especially Vranac. This is home to the country’s largest winery, Plantaže, but also smaller producers.
- Coastal Region: Along the Adriatic coast, vineyards can be found in areas benefiting from the Mediterranean climate.
- Northern Region: While less dominant for wine, there is some viticulture in the cooler northern parts of the country.
The focus in Montenegro is very much on maximizing the potential of its star indigenous grape in these varied settings.
Montenegrin Grapes: The Mighty Vranac and More
When you talk about Montenegrin wine, one grape reigns supreme – Vranac!
- Vranac: This is the most important and widely planted red indigenous grape in Montenegro (also found in other Balkan countries). Vranac wines are known for their deep, dark colour, robust body, and rich flavours of black cherry, blackberry, plum, and sometimes notes of spice, chocolate, or even a hint of bitterness. They often have firm tannins and good acidity, making them excellent for aging and pairing with food. It’s a powerful and distinctive grape that truly embodies the “Black Mountain” spirit.
- Krstač: The most significant white indigenous grape in Montenegro. Krstač is primarily grown in the Skadar Lake basin. It produces dry white wines that are typically full-bodied, with moderate acidity and notes of stone fruit or herbs. Its name means “cross,” reportedly because the grape cluster resembles a cross.
You will also find international varieties grown in Montenegro, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, often used in blends or as single-varietal wines.
A Legacy of Vines: Montenegrin Wine History
Viticulture in the territory of modern-day Montenegro has ancient roots, dating back to the Illyrian tribes and later the Romans. Winemaking continued through the medieval period, particularly around monasteries.
In more recent history, wine production, especially of Vranac, became a significant agricultural activity. While facing the challenges of the 20th century, Montenegrin winemaking has seen investment and a renewed focus on quality in recent decades, with both large producers and smaller wineries working to promote Vranac and other local varieties internationally. The history is perhaps less documented than in some neighbouring countries, but the tradition is strong, particularly the pride associated with Vranac.
Perfect Pairings: Montenegrin Wine and Food
Montenegrin wines, especially the powerful Vranac, are fantastic partners for the country’s hearty cuisine.
- Vranac: A superb match for grilled and roasted red meats, lamb and goat dishes (especially slow-cooked under a sač), Njeguši prosciutto and cheese, hearty stews, and aged cheeses. Its structure stands up well to rich flavours.
- Krstač: Pairs well with freshwater fish from Lake Skadar, grilled white fish, poultry, and lighter cheese or prosciutto.
