Montenegrin Beers & Brews

Živjeli! Welcome back to The Balkan Pour. Let’s talk Montenegrin beer – it’s way more than just a cold drink on a hot day (though it’s absolutely essential for that, especially by the coast!). Think of it as a mountain man’s refreshment, a coastal cool-down, and a taste of local simplicity.

As your trusty beer explorer, I’ve found that Montenegrins appreciate a good beer, even if the stats are a bit lower than some neighbours. Recent data shows consumption around 64.4 – 74.66 liters per person each year. While perhaps not reaching the heights of Croatian consumption, that’s still a respectable amount and shows beer is a popular choice!

From History to Hoppy

Montenegrin brewing history is more recent than some other Balkan countries, with the establishment of the first major brewery in Nikšić in the late 19th century (Pivara Trebjesa, the home of Nikšićko Pivo). This brewery has dominated the market, producing the classic lagers you’ll find everywhere today – the reliable, crisp go-tos perfect for any occasion.

A quirky fact about buying beer in Montenegro: while glass bottles are common, beer is also very often sold in 2-liter plastic (Q-pack) bottles, which are typically cheaper than buying the equivalent volume in glass. Perfect for stocking up for a mountain hike or a beach day – less glass to carry down the mountain!

Fast forward, and Montenegro is also seeing the beginnings of a craft beer scene. While smaller than in neighbouring countries, independent breweries are starting to emerge, bringing new flavours and styles to the mix. It’s a developing scene with exciting potential.

The Usual Suspects & New Faces

You’ll definitely encounter the big name: Nikšićko Pivo. This is the classic, refreshing lager – clean, balanced, and perfect with food. It holds a dominant position, covering more than 90% of the Montenegrin beer market.

Then there’s the emerging craft crew – smaller breweries starting to add diversity with different styles. Keep an eye out for new names as the scene grows!

Culture & Chow

Beer in Montenegro isn’t just a beverage; it’s a common choice for socializing, a refreshing break from the sun, and the perfect partner for food. A cold lager is practically mandatory with Njeguši prosciutto and cheese, grilled meats, or fresh seafood along the coast. Craft beers offer new pairing adventures as they become more available.

Finding Your Pour

You won’t struggle to find Nikšićko Pivo – it’s everywhere! For the emerging craft beers, you’ll need to seek out specialized bars or bottle shops, likely in larger cities like Podgorica, Budva, or Kotor.

So next time you’re in Montenegro, or spot a Montenegrin beer abroad, remember the history, the stats, and the sheer local love poured into every glass. Živjeli!
